With me Now

Author Interview

  • Are you a pantser or a plotter? I’m definitely a pantser.  I can probably count on one hand (with fingers left over) the amount of times I’ve plotted out my books.  I think it reminds me too much of forced outline writing in college!  I like to just sit down with music and write until I stop.  Or fall asleep (FYI: kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk does not count as novel writing, haha).
  • What authors have inspired you to write? I am inspired by the passion and commitment of JK Rowling and her ability to create entire worlds with their own laws, rules, games, and forces or good an evil.  Robert A. Heinlein inspires me with the foresight and creativity he showed science fiction in 1950s and 1960s.  And, of course, George R.R. Martin inspires me with this spunk, sass, and commitment to writing the way he wants to write.
  • How important are names to you in your book? For me, naming a character is like naming a child.  You’re going to be with this person for the entirety of your book/series.  Try going outside and yelling the character name over and over again.  If you don’t get sick of it, that’s the name you should go with.  This is also how my husband and I named our second child.
  • Is there a certain type of scene that’s hard for you to write? I’m bad with sex scenes.  For the sex scene in the first historical novel I wrote, I couldn’t even bring myself to look at the screen while I typed.
  • What is With Me Now about? With Me Now is about Madison Monroe, a college student on her first archeological dig.  She’s working in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and finds something buried on the battlefield she didn’t expect to find.
  • How much research did you do? I’ve been Civil War reenacting since 2001 and met my husband at Gettysburg, so I’m very familiar with every nook and cranny of the battlefield.  In 2004, my husband and I were volunteers at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park in the living history department.  For approximately two days, I worked on an archeological dig and, from that, this novel was born.  Most of the research I did was archeological terminology and techniques of speaking/interacting with ghosts.
  • What writing advice do you have for aspiring authors? Never quit.  It’s too easy to get frustrated: with writing, editing, submitting, rejection.  If this is what you want, work for it!  Believe in your idea and your writing.
  • What are you working on now? Right now, I’m working on the sequel to With Me Now, toying around with two other paranormal romances, and one historical.  There’s always another Chapter 1!
  • And finally, two just for fun: If you wrote a book about yourself, what would the title be? Probably something along the lines of, “So this happened….”
  • What are five adjectives you feel describe you? Loving, nerdy, awkward, rambunctious, and groovy

Excerpt: The hot water and steam of the shower was relaxing, enough to kick the butterflies in her stomach into submission. Her muscles ached. The tendons and ligaments in her upper shoulders and back throbbed as if she’d been moving heavy furniture all week instead of throwing her weight against the screen sifter. It was just another brutal reminder that, although she was thin, she was pathetically out of shape.

She stood under the unrelenting water, craning her neck from side to side in an attempt to work the muscles loose. Maybe Mike could crack her back for her. She smirked. Now that was a pickup line she’d have to remember: say, care to get on top and crack my back?

Once the conditioner was rinsed out of her hair, she turned the faucet off and reached for a towel. Her hair was getting long. It seemed like she’d need to use two or three of the thin, white hotel towels to sop up the excess water. No matter, she could resort to using the room’s hair dryer and, in forty-five minutes or so, the feeble little machine might get her hair dry. Damn it, of all the things to leave at home. She hadn’t planned on needing to look as attractive and desirable as humanly possible. If she had, she’d have brought along a better selection of makeup.

She towel dried her hair enough to keep water from trickling down her back, and then wrapped another towel around her body. It was a good thing she’d done a load of laundry the previous day. Not that she had “date” quality outfits with her, but she was fully aware which pair of jeans accentuated her curves the best. She pulled on a red vintage style t-shirt emblemized with a grayed out Union Jack. It was casual and cute, though she was reasonably sure her clothes were the last thing on his mind.

The steam from the small bathroom had filtered out into the sink area, fogging up the mirror and giving everything a generally damp feeling. She wiped her hand across the condensation covered mirror. In the unobstructed reflection she could see a figure, a man, standing directly behind her.

She bit back a shriek and jerked around. There was no one there; the room was empty.

“Shit.”  The words felt as if they bubbled out of her throat, pushed out by her rapid heartbeat.  She gripped the countertop with one hand to steady herself.  The reflection in the mirror was clear and crisp.  It wasn’t a shadow or the light playing on the steam from the shower. It was a man.  It was him, the man who’d been watching her for days.  He’d stood and watched her at the Spangler Farm.  He’d breathed on the back of her neck, whispered in her ear as she worked in the test pit.

Now he was in her room.

Madison swallowed hard, peering into the main section of the hotel room.  It was empty.  Nothing was out of place, no one was watching her from any corner of the room; yet, she didn’t feel completely alone.  He was still there.

Her hand faltered on the countertop and she sank backward, half sitting, half leaning against the sink.  The air in the room felt soupy and stale.  Gooseflesh rippled down her still damp arms and across her back.  What in Christ’s name did he want from her?

She felt him next to her, his breath on her shoulder.  Please.

Could he hear her when she spoke to him?  It was worth a try.  “I’m not sure I know how to help you.”

But she knew someone who did.

LOSE CONTROL by DONINA LYNN

LoseControl-Evernightpublishing-jayAheer2015-FinalCover

Thank you having me here today! I’m so excited to be sharing my new release Lose Control with you!

Myles and Cassie’s story isn’t about wine and romance. Their journey is about finding love with someone who you not only click with personally, but physically as well.

Let’s be honest, when it comes to sex we all have our likes and dislikes, right? We have our preferences and what we’re willing to do. On the flipside, we also have that list in our heads of deal breakers that when mentioned make you want to run in the other direction because there’s NO WAY you’re giving that a try. Kink-meter has been officially been pegged, thank you very much.

Lose control is about finding that person you’re compatible and comfortable with. The one who has the same wants and desires, and is perfect for you both in and out of the bedroom. It’s about falling for someone who can love every part of who you are … even if some of those parts can be a bit naughty. 😉

BLURB:

Myles Oliver Dayton likes control in every aspect of his life. He desires it, demands it in the board room and his bedroom. But when his teenage crush walks into his office to be his temporary assistant, the tight restraint he kept on his emotions starts to come undone. Something he couldn’t allow. His idea of love is demanding and possessive, and in the end there would only be pain—for both of them.

Cassie Sorrelson grabs onto opportunities when they come along and assisting Myles with all his demands is an opportunity she isn’t about to pass up. Sexy and controlling, he has her breathing hard and soon yearning for more than a few days together at the corporate retreat. When he suddenly pulls back, though, and refuses the desire she knows is running hot within him, Cassie is going to have to work at getting what she wants … making Myles lose control.

EXCERPT:

Myles closed his eyes and took a long, steadying breath. Cassie begging him, pleading with him to take her was playing havoc with the restraint he prided himself in. He never lost control. In fact, he did what was necessary to make sure he never even came close. This sudden willingness to loosen the tight hold he held himself in check with was a temptation he shouldn’t even be considering. Taking another breath, he buried the feeling as quickly as it surfaced and leaned back to face her. “I haven’t begun to punish you. Turn around.”

When she turned, he placed his hand between her shoulder blades and gently pushed. “Bend over, hold on to the handles of the chair, and spread your legs.”

Myles clenched and unclenched his fists while he watched Cassie’s long hair cascade across her shoulders and fall around her face as the line of her back drifted lower and her firm ass rose. The picture she created before him—vulnerable, exposed, and so unbelievably fucking sexy—had him strung tight and ready to break. But when his eyes finally registered the thin piece of material that didn’t even come close to covering where the globes of her ass met, he felt himself snap.

She wore that to the beach? That wasn’t a bathing suit. The damn thing was barely a step above a thong, exposing every inch of soft, white skin on her perfectly rounded backside. Myles didn’t have to think hard to imagine the effect it would have on every man she sashayed past. Possessive jealousy rippled through him at the thought of other men drooling over her and being able to get a glimpse of what he was seeing right now. Mine. The word shouted in his head as a fierce need to stake his claim overtook him. It wasn’t about staying in control anymore. It was about him showing her she fucking belonged to him. And by the time he was done, she was going to know just that.

Myles hooked his finger under the flimsy piece of material and ripped it in two.

Cassie’s head flew around. “Hey. What the hell do you—”

A warning rumbled low in his chest, cutting off her words. “What am I doing, Cassie? Is that what you want to know? You disobeyed me. What do you think is going to happen next?” Myles placed himself at an angle, wrapping one arm around her abdomen to support and keep her still as his other hand came to rest on her ass. “You’re going to remember who commands this body. I’m going to fucking make sure of it.”

Wide, shocked eyes looked back at him. “You wouldn’t.”

“I would and will.”

ABOUT DONINA:

Donina Lynn lives in a small rural Pennsylvania town with her daughter and German Shepherd. Coincidentally, it’s the same town where she grew up. There was a time, however, when she ventured away from her home and moved around a bit, crossed a few state lines, and got a degree or two. But, eventually she found her way back to where it all began.

When she’s not at her day job, hanging with her family, curled up with her Kindle, or typing away at the computer, you can find her infront of the TV watching anything paranormal, sci-fi, or a good action flick. Respect and admiration go to any show or movie that can incorporate explosions, big guns, some ass-kicking, and gratuitous butt shots.

Her addiction to romance novels started as soon as she could turn a page and has carried with her until she decided it was time to fulfill a promise she made to herself and give writing one a whirl. Her goal is to create stories and characters that the reader can relate to, laugh with and have them routing for that happily-ever-after. If there happens to be a few steamy scenes, well…that’s just an added bonus.

Excerpt:

“Charlie coming home from the party, too?” I didn’t dare to hope.

“She didn’t go. She’s pulling an all-nighter in the library with a group for a project or something or other.” He shrugged.

Maybe I would get a stolen night. One like old times.

We sat there for a while in silence, not quite wrapped up in one another but taking comfort from the other’s body heat. I closed my eyes. Even on the sofa a night in his arms was bliss.

“Want to go to bed?” Sam asked, rousing me from the light sleep I had slipped into.

“Yeah, sorry.” I got to my feet, cheeks flushing a bit, realizing I’d just fallen into something that wasn’t a reality anymore. In seven months there had been a few stolen nights with my best friend, but living with Charlie had put a stop to how we once were.

His brows fell, and he looked up at me before getting to his feet. I was turning to head to my room when he grabbed me by the hand, lacing his fingers through mine. I stopped, looking up to search his face.

He didn’t say a word as he led me to the bed he shared with her. I couldn’t help the smile that spread over my lips. The dark gave me the cover I needed to watch him pull the polo off his broad shoulders and cast it aside. I kicked out of my jeans and added my shirt to his on the floor, before crawling into bed.

The assured way he scooted in after me, coming up from behind to wrap his arms around my body, gave me a pain in the middle of my chest I couldn’t explain. I leaned back into his bare skin, and a calm washed over me. Within moments, it was like the nervous bundle of energy that had been wound inside me for months started to dissolve.

He tucked his head in next to my shoulder and whispered, “Goodnight,” against my skin.

About J.R. Gray

When not staying up all night writing, J.R Gray can be found basking in the warm glow of the Miami sun, or at the gym where it’s half assumed Gray is a permanent resident. Book Excerpt:

She stood against a light pole near the curb outside a pub I liked to frequent when I was in town, The Axe and Fiddle. I liked the music and atmosphere and, what can I say, it was a great place to pick up fine blood fills. We were in Cottage Grove, ten minutes from Eugene, so I figured she was an undergraduate at the University of Oregon. Her pouty lips accepted a cigarette effortlessly and the smoke enveloped her curves like she had just appeared out of nothing. Her low-cut plaid skirt waved slightly in the subtle breeze and I wondered what I’d find if I got the chance to sneak a peek. I had to go talk to her so I pulled out a pack of Camel’s to show her I was friendly.

“May I have a light?”

I thought I startled her, but she quickly replied, “You…you’re beautiful!” She shook as she held the lighter out for me.

“Thanks,” I snapped as if I was extremely narcissistic or didn’t care. Funny enough, both were true. I had heard that line thousands of times, and it just didn’t have the same effect as it used to when I was a budding vamp. However, since she was my first woman, I thought I’d let it slide.

She just kept staring at me, scanning me with her hazel eyes like she had to take me in a few times so she would never forget what had graced her presence. She was almost as pretty as I was, but I had a beauty secret she could never maintain; fresh unsuspecting blood. It was tragic really, knowing that her death was only hours away at most. But I hungered for wet flesh and she was the prize I craved.

“So, where’re you from?” I asked.

She continued to stare. “I’m…uh…Joana.”

I smirked. “So, you’re from Joana? Where’s that?”

“Oh, um, no! That’s my name…I’m from Portland!”

I winked at her. “You know you don’t have to shout it, darling. I have perfectly good ears. I’m from Salem, myself.”

Her gaze locked on my three carat diamond earrings dangling from flawless lobes. They were spoils from my last rendezvous. “I shouldn’t be talking to you.” She hesitated. “I’m not like you.”

“Well that’s what I was hoping for. If you were just like me, I wouldn’t be able to have the kind of fun that I was hoping for later.”

Her eyes widened. “What do you mean?”

Now, I could have taken it slow and just brushed my index finger across her rosy cheek while talking her up a bit, but I could tell she was the kind of girl that got taken advantage of quite often. She reeked of insecurity and, while I liked the hunt just as much as the next vamp, I thought she would be an easy way to test my curiosity for the same gender. Her needy gaze reminded me of all the men I had seduced. She would do whatever I wanted whether words were involved or not. Just like I craved blood, she craved acceptance and she didn’t care what the price was as long as she got what she needed; no matter how temporary.

Thanks for having me here today!

A Demon’s Gift is an erotic paranormal romance with a little Christmas flair. It was originally published as part of the Hot Holiday Treats Anthology which was only available for a short time.

This version has expanded scenes and an extended ending. It features a fun cast of characters including: a cocky sex demon, a tough female demon hunter in training, and others. Check out the blurb and excerpt below and if it sounds good to you, I hope you’ll give it a read.

Short Blurb Cordelia, a demon hunter trainee who daydreams of Christmas, fights to resist Argoth, the sex demon, who inflames her desire and reveals a truth that turns her world upside down.  Long Blurb Cordelia is a demon hunter in training. Passing her final test will allow her the freedom to celebrate her first Christmas, but one demon stands in her way. As much as she tries to fight it, to convince herself he repulses her, her body comes alive, betraying her, each time he’s near.  Argoth, a sex demon, is locked in a cell, used as a punching bag for the demon hunter trainees. The only thing he looks forward to is his training sessions with Cordelia. The first time her fist connects with his face, he knows she’s different and that he has to have her, to save her, to make her his.  When Argoth’s truth turns Cordelia’s world upside down, will she give in to her desires or run for her life?

Excerpt

A throaty, sexy chuckle reached her ears. Her skin instantly heated, prickled. Damn it. The cells were soundproof, but somehow the guards or Bix always managed to leave his intercom on when she was in the room. She whipped around and glared at him through the thick glass enclosure which served as his prison. “Shut up, demon.”

His lips turned down in an exaggerated frown. “I couldn’t help myself. Your childish gesture amused me. And how many times do I have to ask you to call me by my name? Say it with me—Argoth.”

It was his fault. The reason she had to keep proving her fighting skills, the reason she hadn’t made certification, the reason she was stuck down there every damn day. She’d learned to somewhat resist the manipulation of several of the others she’d been pitted against but not his. Amused him, did she? Well, let him be amused. He might be her weakness, but she knew his weakness too.

She sauntered over to his cell and slowly pulled her sweaty tank top over her head, exposing her fight-toned stomach. His eyes darkened as they travelled slowly up and down her body before finally settling on her breasts that were clad in only a thin sports bra.

He was a sex demon and had been denied all but self-release since being captured and locked up three months earlier. Denying a sex demon sex was like denying a crack addict crack—except the sex was actually good for the demon.

Her gaze dropped to his crotch and she gulped at the unmistakable bulge there. That damn sexy chuckle floated through the intercom again.

“Don’t play games you can’t control, Delia.”

“I’m in perfect control. You’re the one locked up. And don’t call me that.”

“Yes, I can see your perfect control. I’m certain it could cut through this glass and free me. Think of what we could do if you freed me…Delia.”

She followed his gaze to her chest where her painfully hard nipples peeked through the fabric of the sports bra. His voice dulled her good sense and images of what they could do floated through her mind before she regained control and snapped out of it. Goddamn it.

“Whatever. At least I get to go home, shower and find a lover.” She pressed her breasts against the glass, lowering her voice to a sultry whisper. “When he’s deep inside me, fucking me to ecstasy, I’ll think of you.” She blew him a kiss. He growled, real anger contorting his handsome face. “Oh wait. No I won’t.” She flicked his intercom off and flipped him the finger before leaving the room.

Thanks for stopping by and reading!

New Release – Vampires vs. Zombies!

Official CoverVampires vs Zombies follows a global pandemic thought to be restricted to the world of fiction as it takes out nearly the entire population within the span of a few days. The survivors are confused and disoriented. Those who die don’t stay dead.

Aurora Mathews —along with Damian Deshea, a man who aggravates her more than the walking dead—somehow manages to survive the first onslaught of violence and destruction only to be taken captive by something possibly more terrifying than zombies —vampires.

Each passing night reveals new horrors to the duo. Most alarming of all is the presence of Kieran, a vampire whose newest goal in his afterlife is to see Aurora dead.

Kieran has a history of violence, and women tend to disappear once he takes an interest in them, and he sees Aurora as his last chance of showing off his skills. To top it off, Damian is hiding secrets nearly as dark as those kept by their captors.

Between looking for other survivors, desperately searching for her family, and fighting off attempts on her life, Aurora must learn to adapt to this new world or perish. This is the battle of human survival that she fears can only end in death.

“Oh shit,” he said under his breath. “Aurora?”

“Yeah?” My voice trembled as I slowly backed away.

“Run.” With that, he dropped the chair, pushed me in front of him, and did as he instructed me to do. He ran.

I went as fast as I could, but with his six-foot-two frame, it didn’t take him long to catch up to me. We both turned simultaneously down the hallway, sprinting for our lives.

“Is there a window in the women’s bathroom?” he hollered.

“What?” I yelled back breathlessly, having a hard time hearing over the pounding of my heart and the pursuing monsters.

“Fast! Is there a window in the women’s bathroom?”

I scanned my mind, trying to remember the layout of the restrooms, a hard thing to do when being chased by a psychotic monster that wants to eat you alive. “Yes,” I said uncertainly, my answer sounding more like a question.

“You better be damn sure, or we’re both dead,” Damian came back gruffly.

At his somber statement, I really concentrated, picturing the arrangement of the bathroom interior. “Yes! Yes, there’s a window.”

“Good.”

Before I had a chance to take another step, I was thrown to the side. I went barreling into the women’s room, forcing the door open with my body as I went.

Damian was a step behind me. He lurched into the room, his tall frame slamming into mine and knocking me off balance.

As the door swung shut behind him of its own momentum, we both collapsed to the floor in a pile of tangled arms and legs. The air rushed out of my lungs as his full weight was thrown on top of me. One of my knees slid dangerously between his, and I accidentally caught him in the ribs with an elbow. “Damian,” I groaned, pushing against his chest with my free hand. “You’re squishing me.”

With a grunt of discomfort, he rolled to sit next to me, breathing hard. His hands ran through his dark hair, and his fingers trembled with shock and adrenaline. While I struggled to a sitting position, he touched a hand to his jaw and winced in pain.

With his weight no longer on me, I was able to convince my lungs to start working again. I sucked in deep gulps of air, my throat feeling raw.

As we both tried to collect ourselves, the door flew open, and three mutilated faces stared in at us.

I stopped complaining. Scrambling to my feet, I threw myself against the door. It closed for a moment before being smashed into from the other side, forcing me backwards.

It opened enough for one of the men to get his arm into the room. I spun around, pressing my back against the door, trying to dig my feet into the floor to give me extra leverage.

Damian was on his feet in an instant. He hit the door hard, his hands on either side of my head, the front of his body slamming into the front of mine. He was jammed up tightly against me with my nose practically in his chest. His head was lowered toward me, and I could see his jaw clench with effort.

The door slammed shut on the thing’s arm, and it gave an inhuman screech.

I glanced to the side to see the arm dangling limply next to my head. Blood poured down torn skin and dripped to the floor.

I opened my mouth to scream when Damian pulled back and slammed into the door again, knocking the air, and the scream, out of me. There was a sickening wet noise as the arm detached, landing with a thud at my feet. Without the arm blocking the door, it closed.

Damian reached above my head and clicked the lock into place. With a shaky sigh, he leaned his head against the door just above my shoulder, his body still pressed flat to mine. His breath was hot against the side of my neck, and his body covered me completely. I could feel him all the way down to my toes. He was just a little too close for a casual acquaintance, especially for one I didn’t like all that much.

I brought my hands up and pushed on his shoulders. “You can get off me now.”

He pulled his head back and looked down at me through his hair, his eyes glinting with amusement. “If I must.” He lingered a second too long for my taste before moving away from me.

EXCERPT:

She spins from my arms and drops her chemise to her ankles. Turning her head, long raven locks drape her bare shoulder as she glances back at me. I stare at her naked flesh. Last night in the tunnel darkness shrouded us. Now, in the bright morning light, I see her for the first time.

Her gorgeous hair stops right before her rounded hips. She clings to the oak bed post and eases herself around. The pink of her breasts stare back at me. I swallow hard over the lump wedged at the back of my throat, blocking my words. My gaze traverses the length of her, stopping on the beautiful patch of hair between her legs. All the air in my lungs lunges out of me in a gasp.

“Why are you still clothed?” She tilts her head as a coy smile weaves over her lips.

“Because I cannot take my eyes off of you. Words fail me. They would do no good anyway. There are none to describe you, Snow. Gorgeous. Stunning. Beautiful. They pale in comparison to how my eyes see you. How my heart feels for you. But perhaps with actions, I can show you.” I rush her and sweep her into my arms, squashing her breasts against me.

Crushing my lips over hers, I sweep her mouth, telling her things with my tongue that I cannot say. Soft moans fill our kiss, and my feisty Snow works hard to get me out of my clothes. Hating to unlock our lips, I step back to undo the last of my trousers.

“I finally get to see all of you, too.” She stalks around me like a tiger eyeing its prey. “I like this part best.” She drags a finger the length of my cock, which stands at attention waiting to pleasure her. “But, I also like this part.” Her hands palm the width of my torso. I fight back a smile itching to curl over my lips at her little game. “I really like these.” Gripping my hands, she pulls my fingertips to her lips and kisses each one. “They do so many good things to me.” She makes one final walk around me. “But I like this part most of all.” Pressing her lips to my chest, she kisses my heart. It fills with sadness and love at the same time.

The lump returns to my throat as I fight back choking emotions attacking my head and heart.

“What about my lips?” I ask, forcing a smile over the ache in my heart.

“They are not part of you. They are part of me. They breathe life into me. They feed me words that can never be spoken.” She runs her hand up my chest before cupping my cheek. “They unlock true love’s kiss.”

I ease her backward onto the bed and hover over her body. Leaning forward, I brush my mouth against hers. Hard nipples graze my chest, sending a lightning bolt of arousal to my cock resting against her hips.

“These lips can do so much more.” I look deep into her eyes that swallow me whole.

“How so?” she whispers.

“Like this,” I say, before kissing my way down her body. Spreading her stunning thighs apart, I ease my face between them.

“Darien?” she cries out. “What are you doing?”

“Speaking to you in another language.” I pry open her lower lips with my fingers and swipe the length of her pussy with my tongue.
